Crossing the Cook Strait/By Plane or Ship/Ferry

We are often asked about the trip between the Islands so here we go.  First up you can fly over to Picton or Wellington or you can take the Ferry.

There are two Ferry companies that will ensure your journey between the North (Te Ika a Maui) & South Islands (Te Waipounamu) is a memorable time. The journey itself takes 3 1/2 hours.  If you keep your eye out you may see Whales during migration times, Dolphins showing off and greeting you, NZ fur seals lolling about and many beautiful sea birds.

When checking in for your trip you just drop your luggage at the luggage desk (just like an airport), then walk your way on to the ship.  If you are traveling by Bluebridge from Picton you will be taken to the ship on a bus.The Ferries are large and well equipped for your journey.

If you are taking a car, you will queue up and be on your way in no time.

Anchor Down is 3 minutes drive from the Interislander Ferry and 4 minutes from the Bluebridge terminal.  If you are walking its 15-20 minutes. You might get distracted by the waterfront views so maybe it will take you longer.

Flying.  We are so lucky to have a wonderful local airline and airport.  The airport is a little out of Picton, however the airline provides a shuttle if you need it.    Have a look at Sounds Air.

The flight takes approximately 20 minutes and you get incredible views of the Marlborough Sounds.

Be Aware!!  We do not have Taxi's or Uber.  There is a couple of shuttle companies who are always available at most Ferry arrivals.  It does pay to check with your accommodation provider about transfers to and from their property.

What do we like to do?   Both.  It really depends on what experience you want.

If you have any questions, please just message us and we will do our best to help you out with information.  Thanks for stopping by.
